Equitate offers fun and educational horseback riding camps for children ages 6 and up! Most of our camps are scheduled from Monday through Thursday, 9am to 4pm. Cost for the day camps is $300 for the week for each child, however, if you sign up by March 1, 2010 you will receive a $25 discount. Please call 414.248.3436 for costs for the overnight camps, to learn more, or to reserve a spot for your child.
Our beginner and intermediate campers will start by learning the parts of the saddle and bridle and how to properly tack up a horse. By the end of the week, when they put on a little mock horse show for their family and friends, they will have learned the following, as well as much more:
- How to safely groom and tack
- How to safely wash a horse
- Different breeds, colors, and marking of horses
- All about horse equipment (tack) and how to care for it
- Parts of the horse
- Basic veterinary care by a guest veterinarian or maybe even a trip to WI Equine Clinic, the largest equine clinic in the Midwest!
- Horse Health - Diet, Anatomy, Common ailments and diseases & treatments
- Basic hoof care and shoeing of horses
- The fundamentals of riding including trotting, circling and posting
- How we train horses, including driving and long-lining
- History of the horse
- History of riding
- History of the American Saddlebred
- and...best of all, the kids will learn how to ride and have fun with horses!
Please send us your camp registration & deposits asap. Every rider at any level can benefit from camp, the things we teach, and the activities we have planned. Bring a friend!
Campers will be able to get a lot of lessons in, riding 2 times per day on most days. Plus learn a lot about horse & barn care, veterinary science, horse training, and more. Most camps include a trip to WI Equine, the largest equine vet clinic in the Midwest or a personal tour of the WI Veterinary Diagnostic Lab in Madison, courtesy of Dr. Don Sockett.
And many other aspects of horsemanship, including how to safely have fun with wonderful American Saddlebred horses. Not to mention the fun and friends, horsey crafts, and other opportunities to learn and spend time around horses. Arrival time each day is 9 a.m. Pickup time each day is 4 p.m. The children will need to bring lunch daily, except for Thursday when we provide pizza for lunch. On Thursday, we also have a mock horse show. Parents & friends should plan to attend – cameras in hand!
Cold water will be available at the barn at all times. We ask that the children wear jods (riding pants) or jeans and approved barn boots each day, and bring a change of shorts, as well as sun screen.
